Banish Spots, Fine Lines, and Redness With a Photofacial
Are you tired of looking tired? A photofacial at Her Secret MedSpa in Mamaroneck, New York, can remove the fine lines, spots, and redness that make your skin look old and listless. Here’s how photofacials work.
What is a photofacial?
A photofacial is a beauty treatment that targets unsightly spots, discolorations, wrinkles, blemishes, and unwanted hair on your skin.
Her Secret MedSpa uses the Palomar’s StarluxTM system during photofacials, which treats problem skin areas. Starlux uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to create a dewy, young-looking complexion.
What is IPL?
Intense pulsed light is light therapy that treats spots, lines, redness, and hair where you don’t want them. IPL is like a laser treatment, but where a laser focuses a single wavelength of light at a spot on your skin, IPL uses several different wavelengths, which are more scattered.
IPL reaches down to your dermis, the second layer of skin, without doing harm to your epidermis, the top layer. Overall, IPL does less damage to skin than lasers.
During IPL treatments, skin pigment cells absorb and convert light energy into heat, which destroys pigment to reduce or eliminate freckles and other unwanted spots and discolorations. IPL also kills hair follicles, so unwanted hair won’t grow back.
IPL can reduce the look of:
- Freckles
- Birthmarks
- Varicose veins
- Age spots
- Broken blood vessels
- Spider veins
- Rosacea
- Unwanted hair on neck, face, underarms, and bikini line
What to expect during a photofacial
To start, one of the skin care professionals at Her Secret MedSpa cleans the treatment areas and rubs on a cool gel.
Next, the IPL device applies light pulses, like a camera flash, to your skin. You wear dark glasses to shield your eyes. Some people say the pulses sting a little, like snapping a rubber band on your skin.
Treatments take 20-30 minutes depending on the size and location of the area being treated. For optimal results, you may need several treatments, generally spaced a month apart, which lets your skin heal between photofacials.
When will you see results?
Photofacial treatments take time to work, so don’t expect to see results immediately. Following each treatment, skin pigment cells and the blood in spider veins break down. Over the next few weeks, your body flushes away the dead cells.
Following treatments and over several months, your body heals itself and generates healthy tissue.
